Course of Study and Attention to Well Being

August 30 2023

Hello Hattiesburg District pastors,
The Hattiesburg District office has been made aware of a couple of things related to classes being offered to clergy.

  1. A Covenant Community Designed to Support Clergy Excellence through Attention to WellBeing
The Art of WellBeing, in partnership with the Mississippi Annual Conference Office of Spiritual Leadership, and the Center for Ministry, invites leaders to commit to simple, practical ways to cultivate positive energy, resilience, and creativity for adaptive and innovative leadership.
Many United Methodist clergy in Mississippi are struggling in the aftermath of the pandemic along with the pressures of leadership in a conference with a large number of churches disaffiliating from the United Methodist Church. Even before these challenges, many mainline Protestant churches were experiencing decline by traditional measures.

  1. All Course of Study classes will be taught completely on-line.
Beginning with the Fall 2023 session which begins on Monday, October 2 through Monday, November 20, 2023, ALL Course of Study classes will be taught completely online via Zoom class times and Course Connect learning portal. Students who need to enroll should go to the Center for Ministry / Course of Study website Fall Session - Center for Ministry to enroll, find syllabi, and find class times that your respective classes will be taught.
This opportunity has come through authorization of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, authorized through June 30, 2024. We are hopeful that this means of instruction and learning will be approved past that date.
For persons who need to become enrolled in License to Preach classes, those also will be taught completely online. The next LS class will be offered in September 2023. Again, please refer to the Center for Ministry / License to Preach website for this information. There are eight (8) license to preach classes. The rotation of classes can be entered at any point along the way, with students simply following the rotation until complete.
I hope this information is helpful to everyone. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for clarification, more information, or any way that may be helpful to further a person’s response to God’s call in their life.
Grace, Peace, and all blessings,
Rev. Beth Miller
